kukla fran ollie

This is a photo of Fran and her puppets from KuKla, Fran and Ollie.

My sisters and I went to the Don McNeil Breakfast club show, in 1949. That’s the show KuKla, Fran, and Ollie got their start on. We met several of the cast members by being called upon, because of this poem and the one posted tomorrow. Don came down from the stage, and had us read the poems I had written. Here’s the poem I read, on the radio. Please note, this was also written in 1949.

To bed at ten – a restless night
Up at four – our heads are light
Ready at five – to train by six
So excited – act like hicks
Chicago by seven – Opera House at last
Now to see that wonderful cast
So here we are, and you can’t match our rage
We’re so darn far back, we can’t see the stage

THAT LONESOME WHISTLE

I lie awake and listen

To that lonesome whistle sound,

And I can’t help but wonder

Where that long black train is bound.

Then slumber overtakes me,

And I dream that it is I

Listening to the clicking wheels,

As scenery rolls on by.

I’m looking out the window

Where night has turned to day.

The fields of grain are waving

In their timeless rhythmic way.

The windows frame such splendor

For the travelers on the train . . .

The mountains mighty grandeur,

And an arid dessert plain.

Scenery takes my breath away

With roaring waterfalls,

Trestled bridge across a gorge,

And cliff-side’s rugged walls.

Cityscapes and country scenes,

Formations here and there,

Lakes, rivers, and tiny streams . . .

Earth’s bounty everywhere.

The clicking sound continues,

And I am feeling blest.

The gentle rocking motion

Bids my eyes to close in rest.

Then once again, I slumber,

And awake to different sound,

Aware that I’ve been dreaming,

And there is no train around.

I must take that trip someday

When my hearts yearning grows,

And climb aboard a waiting train,

When that lonesome whistle blows.

       THINGS I LOVE

The laughter of a little child

Timid creatures of the wild

Lilac scent on wafting breeze

And summer shade beneath the trees

A lonesome whistle in the night

From some big train way out of sight

Bright butterflies and lady-bugs

And joy felt from children’s hugs

Birds in all their feathery hues

And poems derived from poignant muse

The gurgling sound of running streams

And magic cast by gold moonbeams

Rainbows after a summer storm

Flower’s beauty as they take form

America’s flag waving on high.

A gentle breeze that seems to sigh.

Rain that cools the heat away

Watching kittens as they play

Frost fronds on my window panes

Long inviting country lanes

Beautiful leaves that drop in fall

So many things, but best of all

A family to love, as they love me

And God, who gave my Soul to me
