Whenever there are lonely days
And no one seems to care,
I must admit the emptiness
Is hard for me to bear.

Yet thinking on past events
I often wonder why,
With all the lovely memories
I feel compelled to cry.

Have I dwelt upon the sad times
And shut the sunshine out?
Did I place up front my sorrows
And maybe pain and doubt?

I think I’ll find a corner in
The recess of my mind
Where I can place unpleasant things,
And make them hard to find,

Then fill my mind with sunshine
And happy times, too.
Then make some room for rainbows
And memories of you.

What visions we have for offspring
When first held to our breast
The dreams that fill our hearts and minds
Are all, the very best

He’d never want for anything
Needs would be obsolete
He’d find success at every turn
And never face defeat

No harm would e’er befall him
Nor troubles spoil his day
His life would be near perfect
If we could have our way

But these are first impressions
These are all extremes
And our hearts are quick to tell us
That they’re just foolish dreams

For how can he learn compassion
If he never feels pain
Or appreciate the sunshine
If his life contains no rain

How can he know the value of
A simple little smile
If he hasn’t had to shed some tears
For just a little while

And how can he know the thrill of
A game well played, and won
If he’s never had to taste defeat
In endeavors he’s begun

How could he truly treasure
Good things that come his way
If he never worked for anything
And spent his life in play

Life’s precious gift to each of us
Are tastes of all things
And we become whatever we are
From nurturing it brings

Spring’s Display

When stately tulips open up

And I see sunshine in their cup

I know that summer’s on the way

Promised then by spring’s display

Silver throated laughter.

Captivating curls.

All the magic essence

Of sweet little girls.

Sunshine and bright rainbows.

Flowers in the spring.

Stardust when the moon glows,

And sweet songs to sing.

That describes my daughters.

Nothing quite as fine.

Vivid portraits treasured,

In this heart of mine.

A smile is such an easy thing

To pass along the way,

Like a ray of summer sunshine

On a somewhat gloomy day.

So pass one on to those you meet,

Then watch that stranger’s face,

And feel the warmth as it’s returned.

It’s called a smile embrace.
