ONCE IN EVERY LIFETIME

Just once in every lifetime
Someone comes along
And hearts then blend in harmony
With words to love’s sweet song

Just once in every lifetime
Two hearts fill special roles
And fall in love from the start
As destined kindred souls

Just once in every lifetime
A union’s meant to be
When those hearts join and beat as one
For all eternity

This was not written for one of our family members; however, it is loosely reminiscent of a couple, who were friends long ago.

AN UNLIKELY PAIR

He was six foot tall and rugged

A barrel-chested man

Square-cut jaw and heavy beard

And a deep, weathered tan

She was five foot two and dainty

Her figure slight and frail

Golden hair curled around her face

Her skin was smooth and pale

Their eyes had met and lingered there

She blushed the palest pink

He found her glance alluring

And couldn’t even think

Somehow he got his courage up

And asked her to a dance

An unlikely consequence

Resulting from a glance

Before too long they married

Their children numbered four

They worked their ranch together

In almost every chore

He taught her how to ride a horse

To rope a calf and brand

He taught her how to herd ‘em in

As they worked their arid land

She taught him how to cook a meal

And trim his curly hair

And how to sew a button on

In case she wasn’t there

He was loud and gruff at times

She, quiet as a mouse

But their love fostered unity

And harmony in their house

They knew about the rumors

Heard often in the past

That they were just too opposite

And their love would never last

For he was such a big gruff bear

She, dainty and sedate

But she thought he was wonderful

And he thought she was great

The years passed by, and they were old

And on the day she died

He held her close, this one last time,

And kissed her as he cried

And then it seemed this big old bear

Just faded day by day

As he longed for his lost soul-mate

Then he, too passed away

Oh, they knew, when they had met that day

Their love was meant to be

That he’d love her, as she loved him,

For all eternity
