GARDEN GUARDIAN

Tired old scarecrow, tattered and torn
Looking shabby and quite forlorn
His clothes are ripped from summer wind
Gaping where they once were pinned

Months ago, in summer sun
He proved his worth with job well done
While flapping arms in disarray
He made the crows stay well away

But now birds perch upon his hat
And snow piles high to smash it flat
He’s seen to shiver more and more
Freezing to his very core

We’ll bring him in where it is warm
Where he’ll avoid the winter storm
I’ll fill his sleeves and sew his rips
Of course I’ll repaint eyes and lips

And when the winter weather’s gone
Just as birds break into song
He’ll take his place as garden guard
And keep the crows out of the yard

SUNFLOWER SURPRISE

I really didn’t want you there
You weren’t even sown
From a little seed the birds missed
You sprouted on your own

You offered up a nice buffet
For little chickadees
To lemon-yellow finches
And butterflies and bees

Then you gave me summer beauty
With your huge yellow crown
And shared your many visitors
Until your leaves turned brown

A SUMMER EVENING

When shadows cloak the evening
As daylight’s turned down low
The horizon basks in crimson
From sunset’s lavish show

Then moonbeams ready golden dust
To sprinkle on this night
While I watch in fascination
As the sun slips out of sight

The birds have sung soft vespers
And insects start their choir
Whispering wings will soon announce
Nighttime’s wise old flyer

Oh, the beauty of God’s wonders
From His great celestial scroll
That mesmerize the summer night
And capture heart and soul

A SEASON’S SWEET CARESS

Summer flaunts its mighty splendor
As it paints the heavens red —
Polishes up the diamond skies
And full moon overhead.

Then morning opens up its eyes
At the sun’s first golden ray
The world awakens, to enjoy
A marvelous summer day

It scatters flowers everywhere
Across earth’s counterpane,
And ripples small drowsy streams
With warm gentle rain.

There’s sweet melodic melodies
By scores of nesting birds,
Joined by frog’s percussion beats – –
And all it lacks are words.

The scent of lilac’s rich perfume
Floats softly on the air …
All part of summer’s sweet caress.
God’s gift of summer fare

     SENSING BEAUTY

As morning shows her golden face

After late evening showers

I watch the busy hummingbirds

Dining on my flowers

Squirrels are eating sunflower seeds

I scattered on the lawn

But take time out to play a bit

Then, up a tree and gone

Two lively sibling rabbits

Enjoy a game of chase

The squirrels are back, and two join in

Challenging a race

Chipmunks share the scattered seed

And hurry underground

Then come right back for more of same

And pouch each seed that’s found

The birds are singing melodies

Led by a mockingbird

His concert is magnificent

A treat that must be heard

Leafy trees cast patterned lace

That filigrees my lawn

They offer birds construction sites

Until the season’s gone

Flowering bushes here and there

Join fragrant garden blooms

And kiss the air with heady scents

As nature’s own perfume

I’m blessed to sense such beauty

And such tranquility

I can’t think of another place

That I would rather be
